Art has long been part of The University of Olivet, and this fall, the Kresge Foundation Art Gallery will feature work by two longtime members of that tradition.

An art exhibition curated by Professor Emeritus Don Rowe will be on display Oct. 22 through Dec. 3 in the Kresge Foundation Art Gallery, located in the Riethmiller-Blackman Art Building. The exhibition will feature work by Rowe, former Professor of Art Gary Wertheimer, and others.

Visitors will have an opportunity to see pieces in a variety of media, including Wertheimer’s Bat, a bronze and travertine marble sculpture measuring 7 by 6 by 1 inches, and Rowe’s Back Yard Lights, an oil-on-board work incorporating mixed media.

Wertheimer was part of Olivet’s Visual Arts program for decades, teaching students in areas including sculpture, painting and other studio disciplines. His work is represented in public and private collections, including a permanent sculpture at Kellogg Community College.

Rowe likewise has a long history with Olivet. He joined the faculty in 1968 after earning a master’s degree in fine art and spent decades teaching visual art and mentoring generations of students. His own artwork has included paintings inspired by places and experiences from his travels.

The exhibition offers students, alumni and community members an opportunity to spend time with the work of two artists whose careers have been closely connected to Olivet’s visual arts tradition.

An artist’s reception will be held Friday, Oct. 30, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

The Kresge Foundation Art Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. or by appointment.
